What’s Your Story?

“Twenty-nine years ago, she stole my heart”

We had just backed in from our date. As we got out of the car, I heard a thud! I turned around and saw she had fallen out. Her lower half was in the car and her upper half was on the ground. I instantly started laughing! After a couple of seconds, I gathered myself, and rushed over to help her up. Even with her laughing, I figured she wouldn’t want to see me after that. I thought to myself, “Well, we had a good run”. It was our second date.

A year and a half later, we said I DO. Twenty-nine years ago, she stole my heart. Today, she tells me I have no choice. Her sense of humor, kind eyes, and warm heart reminds me everyday of why I asked her to marry me. I just like telling people that she fell for me. Interracial relationships can be challenging, but love finds a way.

  • We are Billy and Susan Colon.

I met my wife at work in 1997. She sold a camera to me as I was selected to work out of the country and work in Bermuda for 3 years. I came back to the U.S.A. in 2000 and went back to work at the same place I did before I left. I would see her from time to time at work, and would say "Hi", but she would never respond.

I was just being myself as I speak to everyone at work just to help people get through the day because you never know what someone is going through. I myself was going through a bad divorce, and wasn't ready for a relationship with anyone.

So when she wouldn't respond, I just chalked it up as her being prejudice, so I didn't say anything else to her. So one morning I was walking in the backroom with a coworker(who was white) and we crossed her path and the first thing out of her mouth was "Good Morning!".... I gave her a dirty look and just walked off cause all the other times I said something to her just being nice like I always am and she never said anything; but since I'm walking with a white guy, now you wanna speak!

I can't stand prejudice of any kinda so I developed a strong dislike for her and to this day after being together for 20 years, I can't remember for the life of me how I even started talking to her; but 20 years later...Here We Are & I wouldn't change a thing!
